A safe and empowering space for girls and young women to learn, grow, access information, build confidence, and receive support for a brighter future.

The Girls Nest is a community initiative by GWEN, established in Seke to provide a safe, inclusive and empowering environment for adolescent girls and young women. The initiative responds to the growing need for spaces that promote education, protection, leadership development, digital inclusion and sustainable livelihoods for girls in underserved communities.
Designed as a holistic empowerment hub, the Girls Nest creates opportunities for girls and young women to access knowledge, build confidence, develop practical skills, and strengthen their ability to participate meaningfully in social and economic development.

EDUCATION AND DIGITAL INCLUSION

Through a community library equipped with both physical and digital learning resources, the Girls Nest supports access to education and lifelong learning. The centre also provides computer and internet access, helping bridge the digital divide and equipping young women with essential digital literacy skills for the modern world.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AND SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

To strengthen economic empowerment and long-term sustainability, the initiative integrates livelihood and vocational opportunities, including a community garden, greenhouse projects, and a vocational sewing workshop. These initiatives are designed to enhance practical skills, promote entrepreneurship, and create pathways toward financial independence for young women.

SAFE SPACES FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPEMENT

The initiative further provides safe engagement spaces where girls can learn, connect, and thrive free from discrimination, violence, and exclusion. Through mentorship and personal development programmes, participants are supported to build self-esteem, leadership capacity, and resilience while navigating social and economic challenges.

HEALTH, WELLBEING AND AWARNESS

Recognising the importance of health and wellbeing, the Girls Nest also facilitates sexual and reproductive health education and awareness programmes that equip girls and young women with accurate information, promote informed decision-making, and encourage healthy lifestyles.

The empowerment process starts with knowledge. GWEN shall use various media and approaches to ensure that the various target groups have information they need to pursue and access the rights of AGYW. For the individual girls and young women, GWEN shall ensure that they have knowledge of their own rights as well as where and how they can get the same fulfilled. At the community and institutional levels, GWEN will seek to sensitise target groups on the needs and means of supporting as well as fulfilling the rights of our primary target group.
